A purple blanket of heather covers the Longshaw moors

Serving a range of hot and cold drinks and snacks, this tea room sits within the tranquil and idyllic heart of the valley.

Victorian tourists crossing Longshaw Pond in a rowing boat The history information below is for the whole area of Manifold Valley.

A cave dwelling man awakens, peers out of his cave and onto the lush green and tree filled landscape of the Manifold Valley below him. He gazes onto his neighbours the woolly rhinoceros, mammoth, giant deer and arctic fox. Gathers his tools of flint, barbed arrows and reindeer bones to forage and hunt for his next meal, whilst avoiding the dangers of the fierce predators such as the wolf, cave bear and cave lion that linger in the wilderness. This is the last Ice Age, a glimpse into the life of early man in this valley 10,000 years ago. The homes of theses cave dwellers can still be explored today, a time machine that catapults you into the past, with archaeological treasures and fossil remains in abundance to help piece together the life of early man.

An idyllic view of the trees that cover Froggatt Wood The habitat information below is for the whole area of Manifold Valley.

Laden with lush green grasslands, thick woodlands and limestone crags, the Manifold Valley, contains a variety of rich wildlife. Semi-natural ash woodlands thrive on the thin limestone soil, they contain many species of shrubs such as mountain currant and hazel, attract migrant birds during the summer such as the willow warbler and pied flycatcher. The valley also has some of the finest limestone grasslands in Britain, providing a wide range of wild flowers such as early purple and common spotted orchids. Enjoy the rarities of jacobs ladder in its beautiful purple guise that is abundant along the dalesides of the Manifold Valley, attracting the fluttering northern argus butterflies to the dales during the summer months.
