Managing this beautiful and dramatic landscape you see today in the Peak District takes an enormous amount of time, devotion and resource. Our dedicated team of staff and volunteers strive to maintain the fabric of this beautiful landscape by carrying out a variety of essential tasks which include rebuilding dry stone walls, installing new accessible stiles and gates and thinning the native woodlands that have been planted over the last century.
For thousands of years man has inhabited and settled on the Peak District, leaving his unique mark on the landscape. From the Iron Age hill-fort at Mam Tor to the ancient track-ways of Longshaw, we have a wealth of historical and archaeological treasures to protect and conserve on our land. With the help of experts, who advise our team, we work to conserve our special sites and have a dedicated team of volunteers who regularly monitor these landmarks to check for signs of decay or erosion.
The Peak District is steeped in farming history, with local farmers shaping and managing the land for generations. Our tenant farmers continue to play a vital role on the landscape by working closely with us to manage and conserve the landscape. In doing so, together we are keeping the landscape alive and working as it has been for years. Through funding and being recognised for its high level of environmental management by the government, our farms have made significant improvements to the habitats surrounding them.
The farms have also extended their services to the area by becoming campsites and bed and breakfasts. Some have also opened their doors selling local produce, whilst others have converted buildings into local craft workshops.
As one of nature’s biggest classrooms, we recognise what the Peak District means to educational groups and have created a complimentary indoor and outdoor learning experience with our education centres at Longshaw and Ilam Park. Visits can be arranged across any part of the estate and we can offer support and advice for all ages. Our dedicated learning team also cater for school groups from early years up to A-Level and University.
We also offer Education Group Membership, which entitles educational groups free entry to National Trust properties for one year. Our team also work closely with local schools and offer a Guardianship programme, which offers enhanced contact with our team.
